You may be aware that Elizabeth Wickert serves our faith community as a reader, usher, cook, and gardener! She has recently completed four years of service on the St. John the Baptist vestry. Liz also generously shares her time and talents throughout Summit County. While Liz’s husband Alan served in the U.S. Navy, they often lived abroad and changed locations every three to four years. When they moved to Summit County, they realized they needed a way to meet new people and they chose to do that through joining Rotary in 2007. Liz has served as secretary of Rotary, worked with children and youth in Summit County Schools through the Rotary’s Vocational Service Outreach and has been involved in various activities to support U.S. troops on active duty. Liz has invited members of St. John the Baptist to support these efforts in preparing “care packages” to be sent to U.S. military personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and other locations. Liz also coordinates a dinner for the Wounded Heroes and their families when they visit in April for a week in the mountains. These weeks are especially healing for the families because they are provided many opportunities for recreation and access to mental/emotional support not only for the recovering service person, but for the spouses and children as well.
Liz also serves on the Sheriff’s Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the Summit County Sheriff’s department. This committee serves as a “sounding board” for the sheriff’s department and to bring ideas and questions the community would like to be addressed. Liz has toured the jail, learned about various training protocols the Sheriff’s department follows, helped read applications for the scholarships awarded to local high school students by the Sheriff’s department and has helped support county-wide emergency preparation days.
We thank you, Liz, for the many ways you are a gift and a blessing to St. John the Baptist, to Summit County and to service personnel!
